Then he announced last May its mysterious Project Return to the Obra Dinn, the creator of - among others - Papers, Please Lucas Pope is now back to his community with a first playable demo.
With Return to the Obra Dinn, Lucas Pope aside experimentation in game mechanics and develops a much more classic way. The enigmatic tone is quickly given, when the plot is presented. Lost in 1808, the player is an insurance and is responsible for investigating the strange disappearance of a boat that will reappear some time later in the port of London, but in a sorry state. Step would be to explore the ship and its surroundings to find out what caused all this ... and find the crew. You'll understand the focus is deliberately on storytelling and discovery. If Obra Dinn however manages to stand out, thanks to its unique graphical style. Lucas has indeed succeeded in creating a graphic rendering of 1-bit in three dimensions using Unity. It's frankly ballsy, and you are advised to listen to what he has to say right here.
We do not know much about Return to the Obra Dinn (and we do not know much more), but a first playable demo has now been published by the developer after a semblance of teasing on Twitter. Nothing really concrete, this version being as a kind of technical 0.0.4 buggy and untested demo. However, it will have the merit to show you in action the graphic style and environments, while having the pitch of the game. Demo can be downloaded free itch.io, pending the final version, expected on PC and Mac.
